The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, also called Chessie, is known to be larger than all other Retriever dog breeds. It is a muscular and robust dog breed with a dense, wavy, and waterproof coat that makes it well-suited for all water activities, including waterfowl hunting and retrieval. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have a coat type in three beautiful colors: chocolate brown, sedge (a reddish-gold hue), and dead grass (a faded tan color with occasional grey undertones).

Flat-coated Retriever

The Flat-coated Retriever is a friendly and lively, breed known for its flat-lying coat, which can be either black or liver in color. It was initially developed in the mid-1800s and was originally referred to as the “gamekeeper’s dog” until the Labrador and Golden Retrievers gained more popularity. At one point, the flat-coated Retriever was Britain’s most favored Retriever breed. However, the breed’s numbers declined significantly during the First and Second World Wars, placing it on the brink of extinction.

Due to their high energy and intelligence, this breed is easy to train. Flat-coated Retrievers tend to retain their puppy-like behavior well into old age because they don’t reach full maturity until they are about 3 to 5 years old.

The most attractive feature of this type of Retriever is its striking, unique coat characterized by tight, waterproof curls. They are available in black or silver.

The Curly-coated Retriever is known for being a friendly and playful family member, although it may be a bit reserved around strangers. It also shares a characteristic with the poodle: distinctive low shedding.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

The Retriever type is the smallest of the Retrievers. They are a beautiful, compact dog (pictured in the ad above) with a dense double coat of golden red to dark copper red on the body and white markings on the face, chest, and paws. The tolling Retriever must be brushed weekly most of the year and daily during shedding season due to their double coat. This breed was bred in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever has a curious nature and quick movements, which it uses to catch waterfowl. “Tolling” refers to the breed’s foxlike technique of luring waterfowl towards the hunter. This breed joined the AKC sporting group in 2003.
